WHEN DO YOU STOP TRYING

In light of recent tragic cases of intimate partner violence in Kenya, it is important to recognize that depression is a real and pressing issue. One major challenge many people face is knowing when to stop trying in a relationship that is no longer healthy. Walking away feels difficult because of the emotional and time investment already made, yet ending a relationship at the right time can prevent further sadness and harm. Before making this decision, a person needs honest self-reflection to review their life goals, values, and what they truly need from a partner.

Several clear signs indicate that a relationship may be beyond repair. These include having your emotional needs consistently ignored even after you have communicated them, living in secrecy or fear where you cannot speak openly with your partner, and experiencing any form of abuse or trauma, which requires leaving safely. Other warning signs include trying to change your partner into someone they are not, a complete lack of mutual trust and respect that prevents problem-solving, and an absence of commitment where one person refuses to put in effort to make the relationship work.

Another critical sign that a relationship is failing is when partners stop communicating and ignore each other instead of solving problems together. This is called psychological inflexibility, where one or both individuals become stuck in negative thoughts and fall into a continuous cycle of blaming each other without any willingness to change their behavior. Without genuine effort, trust, and respect from both sides, the relationship cannot be repaired. Recognizing these signs early can help a person protect their mental health and avoid additional emotional pain.
